Series of Six Drawings

Hong Kong and Vancouver are different in so many ways, yet both are wonderful places to explore nature through hiking. Hiking with my family has always been something I enjoy, offering moments to slow down and spend time together.

Through these six drawings, I share the landscapes and experiences that connect me to both places. Although the scenery may be different, the joy of walking through nature with my loved ones remains the same.

Sze Fong Shan is part of the MacLehose Trail in Hong Kong. I was fascinated by the unusual shapes of the rocks scattered across the mountain. This drawing captures a memory of a camping and hiking trip with my family. My two boys, who were around nine years old at the time, are in the drawing. Looking back, it reminds me of the wonderful moments we shared exploring nature together.

We used to own a little campground at Hong Kong Kam Tin overlooking Kai Kung Leng. Although the mountain is not particularly high, its landscape is quite unique. With its dry conditions and very few trees, the open grassy slopes are also popular for off-road motorcycling. This drawing captures the spectacular view from the top of the mountain during one of our family hikes. I have always loved the openness of the landscape and the beautiful scenery stretching into the distance.

Ham Tin is a remote beach in Hong Kong that can only be reached on foot or by boat. Despite its isolated location, its stunning scenery attracts many visitors. One of the most memorable features is the simple wooden bridge connecting the sandy areas across a small stream. Its rustic appearance adds a special charm to this beautiful place and has always been one of my favourite sights along the hiking trail.

One of the things I enjoy most about hiking in Vancouver is being surrounded by its magnificent trees, especially the towering firs and red cedars. I am always amazed when I imagine how many years these trees have been growing and how much they have witnessed over time. Walking beneath them feels refreshing and peaceful. The cool air and the quietness of the forest make every hike a wonderful experience.

Apart from the beautiful forests, one of the things I find most fascinating about hiking in Vancouver is seeing snow-covered mountains, something I rarely experienced before moving here. What I love about Joffre Lakes is that you have to hike to reach these breathtaking views, making the experience even more precious. At the Upper Lake, we could see and hear the water flowing down from the melting snow and ice high above the mountains. Being so close to nature and witnessing this beautiful landscape was truly memorable.

Just a five-minute drive from my home, this boardwalk may not really count as a hiking trail, but it is one of my favourite places to visit. Whenever friends or family come from far away, this is definitely a place we must go. During summer, I often enjoy after dinner walks with my family as the sun slowly sets. The grass, wildlife, water, and ocean come together to create one of the most beautiful sunset views I have ever seen. It is a simple, familiar place that always feels special to me.

Sunrise Meets Sunset

Since moving to Vancouver, I have become more aware of the time difference between here and Hong Kong. Sometimes, while working during the day, I suddenly think, "Oh, it's already midnight in Hong Kong." To stay connected with family and friends, I always keep both Vancouver and Hong Kong time displayed on my phone.

One day, I discovered something fascinating. Around the longest day of summer, sunrise in Vancouver happens at almost the same moment as sunset in Hong Kong. This coincidence felt magical to me. In this artwork, I painted Vancouver's sunrise and Hong Kong's sunset on opposite sides of a transparent acrylic board. Although the two cities are separated by an ocean and many hours on the clock, there is a moment when their skies seem to meet.
